Billy Cobham with Mahavishnu, Birds of Fire - I saw one show where it appeared he was playing a different accent for each of the other musicians. He sat there with a big grin on his face. His torso barely moved, but you could hardly follow his arms.I clipped this from sputnik.com
A billy cobham polyrhythm for you
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a cobham 4 against 3 pattern you might be interested in trying. Ideally you'd have 4 or 5 toms, but with a standard 3 tom setup, you could replace a left tom with say, a hihat for a different sound. I saw a video of dennis chambers soloing and he was using this pattern. But cobham patented it.
single strokes r, l, r, l, r, etc, ( both hands play first stroke on snare):
Assuming you had 4 toms one of which is to the left of the normal first tom position, you'd then 'share' the normal first tom for the stroke I've marked with a *> 4 strokes Right stick, clockwise: Snare, *tom, tom, tom,... Snare, *tom, tom, tom,... etc,
> 3 strokes Left stick anticlockwise: Snare, *tom, tom,.. Snare, *tom, tom,...etcafter 3 times around of playing 4 strokes on the right, and 4 times around of playing 3 on the left, it resolves and starts again with both hands returning to the snare .
Two other ways to use it are as double strokes,
clockwise rr, *rr, rr, rr , anticlockwise ll, *ll, ll ( alternating rr, ll of course)and as unisons, same as single strokes, but instead of alternating r, l, r l, simply play hands together while going opposite directions.
The cycle is like this:[1234 1234 1234] [1234 1234 1234], etc for right hand
[1231 2312 3123] [1231 2312 3123], etc for left hand
