There's a track on the first Bruford Levin Upper Extremeties CD -- I think it's the 3rd or 4th cut -- that opens with a location recording from some local diner, and amidst the clatter of silverware & ambient conversation drummer Bill Bruford is explaining to his bandmates the polyrhythm that makes up the basic "groove" of the tune which follows. He even goes so far as to demonstrate, banging out the two rhythms with his hands on the table, first separately & then simultaneously, before it segues into the actual studio recording. It's practically a textbook example. Also check out Terry Bozzio's performance of "The Black Page" from Frank Zappa's Live In New York album. The entire first third of the tune is a solo drum performance made up of numerous polyrythms: n-tuplets and nested n-tuplets, all against a slow 4/4 which Bozzio dutifully outlines with his hihat while articulating the ever-changing subdivisions with his hands and kick drum. Mindboggling.
