Re: Drumming Query

I do believe most of this sort of thing in rock involves more than one player. The Talking Heads dabbled in it for awhile, Joe Jackson, and the Grateful Dead, I think. To my knowledge all used an additional percussionist or drummer. Stewart Copeland is the most likely suspect I would imagine might have done this by himself, but I don't know.

I saw Olatunji in 1985, but again, there were several players, and of course what he did wasn't 'rock.' But it's a logical jump from what he did to Afrobeat, or worldbeat, whatever you want to call it. Fela Kuti is the guy; his drummer was Tony Allen when his original band was at its peak. I do have the 1970 collaboration between Fela & Ginger Baker around here somewhere, but I'd have to dig it up & can't say offhand if it fits the bill. In any case, Fela's the place to start. Elsewhere in rock it seems like a poor fit for the most part, but it's certainly possible someone's done it. But to my knowledge most applications in rock involved dabbling at best, likely with the combination of a drummer & percussionist. Were this doable by one player, then the usual prog virtuosos & Peart-types would be as likely as any to be capable, but I'd say looking at the career of someone like Bill Laswell might make more sense.
