D,
The ribbons are separate for each terminal. I was tempted to do one on top of the other but then thought better. If it had failed to work, I would have wondered if this was the issue.
The 14 wires are sandwiched between the adhesive sides of 2 butyl tape ribbons. Total thickness is a hair under 1/4". You know how the Cascade adhesive is strong & sticky? Well, this one is meaner still. Nothing is moving inside. It may not be the "perfect material" but it certainly is very competent.
The first test of the butyl tape was actually done with a single strand of 30ga. over a week ago. (BTW, each 10ft length measures about .8 ohms!) I tested with naked 30ga and with butyl sandwiched 30ga. No difference was heard or measured. This gave me some confidence that the butyl would work (not damage the sound). To be sure, the 30ga had decent bass either way; nothing to brag about, but not "thin" sound. I think the reason is that either naked or covered, it was never anchored to vibrating surfaces (nor the floor).
What I am getting here is improved quality, detailed bass down to the limits of my MMGs. Though the frequency response is virtually the same for both versions of MM842, the sound is different. The ribbon version has quite more perceivable bass and more punch in the region.
In addition, the tests with Cool Edit -- which I developed for the Razoring evaluation -- leave no doubt. The ribbon version punches through at a clearly higher rate during dynamic passages. In fact, it may be that all that improved is the dynamic behavior at the lower end, leading to the perception of more bass.
I am pretty certain that vibrational issues are not at work here. Always, the MultiMag 842T was MUCH better isolated than the ribbon version. I tried several ways and none made a difference. The bass and impact only improved with the ribbon config. And, like I mentioned earlier, the butyl tape itself did not help make a single strand of 30ga behave any different from a naked one.
Lastly, I should add that careful cable vibration damping has been a practice of mine for quite a while now. That and not leaving the cables on the floor.
