Hi AndyI don't "really" know. The ribbon idea came from somewhere a long time ago. I originally intended the 842 layout to be done that way. However, a suitable tape base for it escaped me. Then, by accident, I discovered that the A/C insulation (butyl) tape I got for another purpose, could do the trick. Since the Razoring Cascade material already seems to be made of a similar synthetic rubber, I figured it would not hurt. It appears to work well but I will need a few more day to be certain that this is a "right" material (I had been looking for a cotton-base thick tape). Vibration damping is key to the magwires performance.
Q1. Next to each other at about 1/8" separation. I bought sevaral combs at the local CVS pharmacy...they loooked at me funny.* The combs helped to keep an even separation as I applied tape.
Q2. It is 8x22ga + 4x26ga + 2x30ga for EACH terminal (in my case, 4 x 10ft cables or ribbons.) This 842 combo is roughly equivalent to 12-13ga, BTW.
* If you go to the pharmacy to buy the combs, do NOT tell your wife where you are going. Mine asked me to bring "other things" for her. Several sets of combs purchased by the same guy may raise some eyebrows...but...when bought with other, more clearly feminine items, you WILL feel the stares.
