RE: Apologies for the long post, answers and some speculation on the ribbons

The solution you are seeking for the Apogee full range can be had. Go to the 'gon and look up GallantDiva and his rebuilt Full Range with Centaur Major (if memory serves?) Mid/tweeter assembly. He is convinced that his solution is complete. I have no reason to doubt it.

Again, I would refer you to Graz's Aussie Apogee - Apogeeacoustics.com for some ideas as to how to solve the floppy middle of the midrange. In particular by getting one of their midrange/tweeter assemblies built for their Stage/Duetta clone.

Alternately, may I suggest a line array of BG Neo8 (cures cancer and does your windows too :)))- say 8 or 9 per channel to solve your floppy midrange. You can go down to 200 hz for the crossover, or you can go for a BG RD75 with a bit of a wing for a baffle, and take 150 hz for a sharp rolloff. The RD75 is a good middle ground between the Apogee Bass, and the ribbons. Not quite as quick as the tweeter, no where near as slow as the bass.
The Neo 8 is far closer to a ribbon in speed than anything else I have heard, barring plasmatrons - which I have not heard. That said, I would not make claims on its performance against the big Apogee's upper midrange and treble (and the powerful bass). Memory of these is one of the foundations of my interest in audio - one of those magical transformative moments.

Then, of course, you can get a Classe DR 3 VHC and have it updated with new caps, cleaner copper wiring and state of the art resistors and power supply components (FREDs etc.). I absolutely adore my DR-9 on the tweeters - stable as a rock.
