If you remember the FR charts I posted, you will see that the big cavity resonance simply cancels out and falls away as you increase the length of the array. What remains, is small and easily EQed and is more consistent going off axis. Even with few drivers, the notch filter actually works well enough.
I think there is a directionality issue with the resonance soundwaves that they are only released forward in a fairly narrow beam. The area immediately in front of the openings does not produce resonance, only the areas behind the grate produce resonances. The release of standing waves is from a narrow area of reflections from the diaphragm.
