45 degrees is the total dispersion pattern. This is plenty large enough to create a sweet spot without radical shifts when one moves around. I prefer a tighter dispersion pattern to a point. Head-in-vise listening is not my idea of fun!
Multi-butt listening is of no interest to me. IMO the stereo presentation will always be degraded to some extent with multiple indivduals listening no matter how wide the sweet spot. Optimum stereo is designed for one well seated listener.
I think what most people want with multiple listening is one, two or perhaps three individuals sit near the sweet spot and have relatively even tonal balance, high frequency dispersion, etc. Wider dispersion patterns will accomplish this goal much more effectively than a narrow dispersion pattern. But again, no matter how wide the dispersion pattern, the stereo presentation will always be degraded except for one properly seated listener.
I use Quad ESL63 with about a 50 degree dispersion pattern in both the horizontal and vertical planes. With this design one can actually move all around the room without major shifts in tonal balance or frequency response. Yes the sweet spot is the best spot, but for mulitple listening, when guests are over, we can actually get a very nice presentation in terms of tonal balance and high frequency pretty much any where in the room.
