[8/13/2010 Moronic Error Edit Alert - To keep things relevant to posts that follow, I have not touched the text below. However, I made a mistake which I mention further down in this thread. The flat response is, indeed, the result of the panels' polarity being inverted. I just did not realize that I had them properly connected. This is how they actually come from factory. Thus, the BLUE line on the chart below, corresponds to this: panels that are in inverted polarity, electrically. I am adding a second, corrected chart below the original.] My apologies, JBen.D, these scans were taken with the A21 when it was still here for the Razoring tweak tests. The story has always been the same no matter what drives my MMGs. If I undo my bi-amp and try a 2nd design, (1st order/1st order), I have to use the drivers in the same polarity.
In fact, the day (years ago) that I first tried it, I simply put them "by the book". An hour later (not knowing it may have been a polarity thing), I went back to the original design. I remember thinking "yuk! no wonder everyone says that the original design is better!".
The next time I tried it months later, I really liked this "2nd design"! Why? By accident, I hooked them up "wrong". Measurements revealed why I liked it.
Now, perhaps the minor physical changes done to the panels of MMGs newer than ours, would make them behave different. I doubt it. But short of finding a local willing to bring his in for measurement, I really don't "know".
Left MMG, Blue=panels in same polarity, Red=panels in inverted polarity [error on this line and the chart's header, see 2nd chart below]
Low panel with 2.2mH inductor, 1st order. Tweeter with 12uF cap, 1st order.
Full Razored, no P-Frames, standing straight, tweeters out, chokes on.
Mic at center (between MMGs) from seating (head) position, 11' from each MMG.
MMgs 4' from wall, 2' from sides, Room 12' wide, 25' long, 7.5 high.
Flat TV, audio equipment and sub-woofer (off) in middle between MMGs.Corrected description for polarity:
