That sounds about right, when you switch polarity the difference should be audible but subtle. More audible on Maggies than some other speakers I assume because of the asymmetrical drive.

BTW, the hot terminal on your amp doesn't mean the polarity is one way or the other. Some components reverse polarity, some don't. It isn't generally indicated on the device though it may be in the specs. And recordings aren't consistent. I think the important thing in DR's instructions is to make sure that you flip the wires when you reverse the speakers just to get a fair comparison.
