Re: Faithful reproduction is a fluid perceptual reality.

Relative to current technology, science fiction is not real.
But compared to old technology current technology looks like science fiction. The problem is that the concept of "stereo" is old technology that is also current technology. It's the same old same old that it was 20 years ago that it was 40 years ago. Focusing on the illusion of realism didn't expand the technology it just brought a focus on a particular somewhat queer application of the science.

Faithful reproduction is the original quest that spawned audiophiles.
You failed to answer the question. The convenience of evolving a ill-definition of "faithful reproduction" has served the industry well.

"It", is fantasy. Standing on fantasies is perilous.
Yea unfortunately "it" (the concepts behind faithful reproduction) has devolved into fuzzy definitions which allows the proliferation of such fantasy's but "it" (the concepts behind faithful reproduction) is in itself not a fantasy.

Realism is not difficult, it's a sure path to fantasy.
Exactly wrong! Using the realistic reproduction of live acoustical music to evaluate audio system performance is extremely difficult and that's why it has become a sure path to fantasy.

As such, subsequent equipment purchases reinforces notions I find unstable.
I can't argue with this because most of the time I do agree. However I suspect some few audiophiles are capable of implementing the concepts of the absolute sound correctly. However in my 5 or 6 years of posting on AA I've never run across an audiophile who I felt was successfully doing so.

Saying, "it figures", is another way of resigning to the acceptance of a phantom directive.
As opposed to what? The fact is most audiophiles, myself included, at best only can partially emulate a reasonable approach to evaluating audio potential and performance.

I think the quest for "realism" in audio is a noble cause but at the same time I realize it's an impractical peculiarity.

It's the misuse and misapplication of the concepts surrounding this most difficult "quest" that give rise to the "fantasy" I believe you are describing.
