There are quite a few minimally miked classical recordings from long ago (Mercury) as well as contemporary ones from Telarc, Reference Recordings, etc. that provide good reference points. Also, I have a number of Windham Hills albums of solo piano, guitar, and some ensemble using similar techniques that are very natural sounding as well. Gotta love record labels that were founded and owned by the artists themselves!Following my move to a small college town, I have enjoyed many opportunities to hear a range of live music concerts at the university. A couple of weeks ago, there was a "walk through the history of keyboards" concert using clavichord, harpsichord, fortepiano, and of course the modern piano. Last week, the female chorus held a short concert accompanied with harp, piano, and violin. It was in a small music theatre with excellent acoustics. They began singing standing in a line behind the audience. The next piece began as they walked down both aisles to the stage. At the end, the last piece was sung with them standing in both aisles. Talk about surround sound!
