Re: SM want it all?

So I finally got around to rigging up a stereo dipole, with the Choueiri matrix filters (http://www.ambiophonics.org/Ambiofiles.htm) through my Transporter/Gallo system; speakers 50cm apart.

Realistic? When I picked my jaw off the floor, I thought so. On "Someday my prince will come", the piano is a way out in the side of the room - about 150 degrees off center, and very solidly positioned.

The downside seems to be that the illusion collapses completely unless you're near the sweet spot. I prefer a traditional stereo setup (http://www.essex.ac.uk/ESE/research/audio_lab/malcolmspubdocs/C78 Loudspeaker placement.pdf works well) which gives some spatialness even if you're walking around the room.

So then I tweaked the Choueiri filters to be much less extreme (flattened the frequency response and reduced the crossfeed by 6dB). Playback on a regular stereo layout. And I'm extremely happy with this: the sound stage extends a couple of feet beyond each speaker, without losing the central focus, and still sounds good outside the sweet spot.

Of course there's no "rear" ambience. But I don't mind. This is the most immersive stereo I've had.

(If the implementation were with analog electronics, you could call it Engineering. But it's all done in software...)
