Leaving aside subliminal messages I'm not sure if you are agreeing or disagreeing :)

You asked "Wouldn't the ambient noise level of a recording or a live musical event be relevant in determining at what threshold a sound is audible?" I was saying that it is, but I was reminding you that I still want at least, say 10 or 15dB lower level than that.

There are plenty of discs I have where I can hear the noise floor of the room they were recorded in, the noise floor of the tape they were recorded with and the noise floor of my system. There are discs that I used to assume were recorded with noise gates but now I can hear many things happening "in the cracks".
