Re: How low is too low

The threshold of hearing at 1khz is often taken to be 10 to the minus 16th power watts/square centimeter. This is often referred to as zero db.

It undoubtedly varies with frequency and from one individual to another.

This site gives it as a graphical representation as well showing its variation with frequency and contours for equal perceived loudness as a function of frequency at different sound levels.

It also gives the threshold of pain as 120 db (10 to the minus 4th power watts/square centimeter) also expressed as 20 pascals.

I think the background noise threshold specified for concert halls by AIA (American Institute of Architects) is 27 db but I don't recall if that is A weighted, C weighted or unweighted. (My best recollection is unweighted.)
