May a simple/complex search choice up front.
Then for simple seaches, an out-of-band whole word/partial button.
That would make it easy for simple searches, without having to escape the '^' character, or even understand these conflicts :-).
Only if complex search is chosen, would you get the flexibility of in-band special characters like '^', and complex people could deal with how to escape the in-band special characters. Even then, I am not sure how you would cause the escape to be in effect for some search parameters and not others? Isn't the escape mechanism global?iq100
