I haven't heard the Altec 604 so its a little difficult to comment on differences.What I've read about 604 is mainly about the older versions with alnico magnets.Seem to have been some changes to the greatplainsaudio version.
My guess is that the Altec will be a little more forward sounding since the midrange from 1.5kHz is hornloaded.In a big room it probably is more impactful in the lower midrange to mid bass than AN E,but I doubt it will be as even and extended as the Es.
Difficult to give any advice,its about what you are looking for,not what I like ;-) Try to get a listen to the Es,and if you miss impact and excitement the Altecs might be more right for you.
Maybe you get more input if you post on the high-efficiency forum also.
