I have sold most of my set-up,only have the DAC kit 1.1 left, and have moved over to less expencive equipment and a little different direction with the somewhat power hungry Von Schweikert VR4HSE.
If I had a smaller more even squared room I have a hard time guessing what can be much better than the AN speaker kit 04 and the interstage monos......better AN gear offcourse but it comes at a price...As I said I still love the standard kit 1 and I like its cleanness, balance and completeness, and there are many differences to the monos I had.
IHiB c-core transformers in the monos and L3, and the paralell 300B I guess will make a sonic difference to single 300B as well.
If I should try to think of clearly differences its first of all more power and unrestricted dynamics in the monos. The bass has more power, more oomphh, and the differences in different bass-drums,bass-guitars aso. are clearer than with the standard kit 1.The recordings kind of opens up more with the L3 and monos, less coloured I guess, less distortion, and when listening to complex music the kit 1 don't have that grip and insight as the L3/monos.
I like transformer couplings, and they seem to have less distortion, less phase problems and less compression than a cap coupling between stages. On the other hand there is a lot of copper wire in the transformers I have had,and in some peculiar way I often get the feeling that its a less direct/fast sounding coupling? I don't know, maybe someone who understands electronics more than I do can elaborate?
Peter,Andy ? ;-)Paralell was a must for me ,because of the power and me being able to crank up my Led Zeppelin,AC/DC,Iron Maiden aso records, and the fact is that I felt in my big room that I actually should have had about double the power, and I was very tempted at trying building a paralell 211 amp with AN transformers but I kind of chickened out because of the high voltages.I might try it one day though.....
Hope that helped some;-)
And I like vintage Altecs a lot by the way, which ones do you have?
My favourite hornsystem is the Altec A5,allthough I have only heard them with the smaller basscabinets,825/828.Cheers
