About the choice for a speaker kit

After listening to speakers from a few different brands I found out that in general I really like the sound of Audio Note speakers. Now I'm thinking of buying a pair plus a suitable amp. However, since the budget is limited ($5-6k for speakers plus amp) and assembling it myself appeals to me, I'm also considering buying a speaker kit plus cabinet (if it is possible to ship it to the Netherlands). Perhaps I will like speaker kit 02 or 03 more than finished AN-J speakers in the same price range.

Now the tricky thing is that I don't know what to expect if I choose for a speaker kit. I have listened to a pair of AN-Js and AN-E spe but I read on this forum that a speaker kit usually sounds very different from the finished product.

So how did you guys do that? I know there are quite some people on this forum who build their own speakers. How did you choose if and, if so, which speaker kit was right? Did you have a chance to listen to a pair of those speakers or very similar ones? Did you have an idea of what to expect from experience with other speakers? Or was it also a little bit of a guess? Any advice is very welcome.
