RE: yet another post about room placement for Magnepan 1.7s

As I said, I think you have to try the speakers against the stairs arrangement to see if it works. Usually, the ear is pretty sensitive to irregularities behind dipoles, but really, it's going to depend on the height of the wall. My inclination, though, would be to put the speakers opposite the stairs.

I have a pair of MMG's and as much as I love them, I think you'll find them adequate but underwhelming for home theater. They don't have much bass and they don't have much slam. A sub could help. Whereas my old Tympanis were the best home theater speakers I ever heard. Best theater speakers, really.

Caveat: I'm comparing them to good stuff, not the typical home theater speakola crap. It's just that they aren't going to measure up to your 1.7's.

If it were me, I'd be tempted to do surround for audio only, as well. So I lean to a single system. I would *not* bother with a center channel unless you're doing theater style seating with people off to the side. The center channel will only degrade the sound. You'd be better off going with 6.1, the extra rear speakers will make a difference.

Finally, I concur with those who have pointed out that the audio will benefit from the acoustics of the larger space.

The only reason I can think of to have two systems is if someone is going to be watching TV while you want to listen. But with adjacent rooms and a wall that I'm guessing isn't very soundproof, you may not be able to do that anyway.
