The thing is, the peak to average ratio of acoustical music is 10-20 dB; that means that if you measure 22 watts RMS, you need an amplifier with something like 2200 watts. I believe Satie, who likes to listen at musicians in the room levels, has just such an amp on the bass panels of his Tympanis. For those who keep their peaks to 116 dB or so, which is adequate for realistic reproduction of most classical music, peak power requirements to avoid clipping are lower, but still well up in the 100's. Many prefer to listen at lower levels, though.
