RE: Receiver or amp to drive MMG

66.44.61.33

I'm not an electronics guy but I know the impedance of speakers rises and falls from moment to moment and also depends on frequency. If it gets down below 4 ohms a lot you would get problems with some moderately priced gear (and some expensive gear.) I saw an old review of Linn Isobariks where the reviewer said the impedance stayed around 3 ohms and would be impossible for most amps to handle cleanly. They were measuring 10% distortion in the midbass and Linn blamed it on the amp they were using - at least that's how I read it. In another article I read Peter Moncrief recommended a pair of small panels and a 'high current receiver' as the best bet for an inexpensive but high quality system. So if Magnepan has owned up to the low impedance issue, given that it's rare for a manufacturer of moderately priced gear to own up to its products being in any way fussy, I think they probably are, and I should take seriously the high current business. You say you have measured the current in your system? Far out! Can you measure the momentary peaks?
Best,
PH
