Bingo, Al! This evening I was listening back and forth just to 3 pieces in order to further refine my description of what I hear when the chokes are NOT on. I am still using the regular xover (current MMG design) for this retesting cycle.
All three pieces displayed the two behaviors that you just described, until the chokes were back on.
Surprisingly, this evening my wife heard the transition from chokes to no chokes. She shocked me with a comment. She was sitting next to me while I tested with: "Sultry Song", Nestor Torres, Dance of the Phoenix CD. This is one of the few "jazz" pieces that she likes. The piece is deep, tall and wide in 3D imaging content. It busts past my walls, even with no chokes.
Just as I was noticing how forward and shallow it all had become with no chokes, my wife said something curious: "It sounds like a sandwich". Then, she properly described that the image had become squeezed together back to front.
Having seen my puzzled expression, she then noted that my time was up. She needed the TV...end of listening. I'd swear that she read my mind and knew what I wanted her to say. Except that she's done this type of observation out of the blue at random times before.
