I have found actually the opposite of what Mr. Valin that in fact image and soundstage depth are BETTER with a properly setup and properly driven pair of planar speakers.

They will reveal a weakness in the electronics...especially in the highs that can shorten the soundstage and make it sound flat and this is because ribbons and electrostats are not kind to the typical hash that is found in most amplifiers in the high frequencies, which serve to make the highs subtly louder.

Perceived loudness in the highs is a big factor in determining distance from a sound source and therefore when the sound is heard as slightly louder it is also perceived as being closer to the listener. So sounds that should have a reduced HF content and thus sounding farther away will now sound closer and the soundstage depth reduced.

I had this starkly revealed to me once when I was reviewing several preamps on a pair of Apogee Caliper Signatures. One preamp in particular sounded very good...except that the images and soundstage were completely flat when it was in the chain. Removing it and replacing it with one of the other preamps suddenly changed the 2d to 3d in a rather dramatic fashion. I have never heard it as dramatic as this but a similiar effect can be heard with some cables and power amps.
