Marriage to an Aussie does get you residency and residency gets you nationality after 2 (about to become 4) years.
The immigration department monitors (to greater or lesser extent) the relationship and may visit to see signs of cohabitation.
I have no idea how this is implemented across races.
There is an inquiry going on at the moment into Australian citizens and residents who have been arrested or deported.
Nearly all of these cases concern people of non-european appearance
This includes young children locked up in our detention centres for prolonged periods.
Over 90% of all people locked in these centres are eventually given the right to stay.
The criteria are stringent as I know having become Australian after 7 years residency (temporary and permanent) but there is a deliberate confusion by the government between refugees and illegal migrants which has a decidedly racist edge.
