Lennon said the Beatles died as a live act BEFORE THEY EVER EMBARKED ON A THEATER TOUR. Or, in other words, prior to February of 1963. Which was before they were 'famous.'He also stated that his songwriting partnership with McCartney was over by 'around 1962,' also. You want to play games, there are plenty of contradictory quotes out there. Some make sense. Others do not. It appears you have difficulty ascertaining the difference.
I've seen the quotes that talked about their deficiencies as a live band. But there is such a thing as reading between the lines. They're based on the conditions of the venues (such as Lennon's comments that many places they played, like Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl, etc., were built to accommodate orchestras, not rock bands) and not being able to hear anything on stage due to screaming teenaged girls, which understandably led to apathy. I've never seen anything that said they were terrible because they actually thought they were terrible as musicians or entertainers. Maybe you have. Perhaps you could kindly share something to that effect with us.
Maybe it was in one of those books that Lennon denounced as sanitized 'bullshit' in the style of the Sunday Times.
Maybe, if you'd like to accuse others of quote mining, you could take a look at my post below where I bring up the inconvenient fact that the guy putting down the Beatles as a live act--for reasons you obviously don't understand--also claimed in 1970 that the music of Yoko Ono influenced him 1,000 times more than the music of Bob Dylan ever did.
See? It's not that hard to play games with quotes. Keep it up, if you like. I'm not a contrarian merely looking for an argument. You consistently post what I personally consider to be nonsense, so I hope you're not surprised if someone chooses to call you on it. But, hey, if you still detect redundancy in the Live And Let Die lyric, then don't let logic & facts change yr mind.
Maybe, if you think the Hollywood Bowl rec is so crappy, you could at least tell us why you feel that way. Lennon said that he was afraid of what it would sound like, because to his knowledge they were never recorded properly live, but gave no indication that he'd actually heard the tapes.
Maybe you'd care to think about the idea that what you characterize as 'hero worship' is grossly distorted so far as I'm concerned, and that if you have ideas about what constitutes great drumming, you could perhaps share them with us. It would seem, based on yr dismissal of Ringo's playing, that skills like timekeeping don't mean much to you, even though the instrument in question is allegedly a rhythm instrument.
If I didn't know better, I'd offer the mild suggestion that maybe you just don't know that much about drumming. But, hey, you're the expert who likes to shout it from the rooftops, so please, by all means, tell us why he wasn't that good...who you think is...and why.
I could use a good chuckle.
As for 300,000 people coming out to see the Beatles in Adelaide, Australia, in 1964, it wasn't even for a show. It was just a public gathering for an opportunity to actually see the Fab Four, who by that time had taken the world by storm. Which was why I didn't see the Beatles being top-heavy on that list being that much of a shock. Certainly not as much as Wolfmother placing at #38.
That this mass gathering had nothing to do with a live performance, I wonder what relevance yr post about the Beatles being a crappy live band has in any case.
Anything else?
