your knowlege is impressive.not that my opinion is worth a sh**, but here's my .02
I would also agree that Sgt Pepper is a very hard hiting record (indeed), but I'm not so sure that you'd be thrilled w/ my impression of Smile.
Pet Sounds and Smile are great works. No one in their right mind would argue that;
but when I (I) listen to these albums, I think the same thing every time; BW is a studio wizard, a genius- capable of greatness.
David Bowie might be similar example [brilliant musician/studio wiz, couple o masterpieces to his credit.]
Imo any such masterpiece might compare favorably to, or better than, Oh, any one of the former Beatles' solo works...
maybe to some of the early Beatles stuff, or perhaps even rival an album like Let it Be (which I dig btw.),
but to hold a candle to works like Rubber Soul, S. Pepper, MMT, Abbey Road? Now you're stepping on greatness, and that's a whole-nother-level imo.
And if I were to pretend that the beatles were not who they were in terms of popularity etc, I think I'd still arive at the same conclusion...
I think if you took the cool out of the Beatles, their stuff would still be more creative, technically better, and far more complex.
I see your point with reference to their acceptance and the masses. You're right, there WAS a culture shift present at that time, and truth be told, BW + Smile would likely have come off a bit like a failed crossover attempt.
Fwiw, BW had some real Genius in him, but I (I) cant help thinking that even his best work is a little flawed, and just not quite over the top.
I think that (instead of spiraling into and out of depressions etc.) he should have simply been glad to have met with great success at all, even if it did come with a temorary label of 'surfer dude'.
So many worthy musicians dont make it at all.
sum it up in my opinin, BW might have made a good Beatle. His talents maybe even on par with any one of them..
...perhaps even any one Beatle and G. Martin combined.
but no one can, or ever will top the Beatles.
