Just one thing--SMiLE was scrapped before Sgt. Pepper came out. If BW was daunted by the task of living up to the Fab Four, he never would've made Pet Sounds. If anything I think it was the Beatles who were actually the ones who felt outmatched in this contrived competition. Not that BW wasn't insecure, just that I don't think it was Pepper that did that to him. Remember also that the Beatles loved the music of the Beach Boys, who were the most popular rock act in the UK in 1966, but Jimi Hendrix did not, and was outspoken about that. Rolling Stone magazine was also dismissive of Wilson & he took that kinda hard.
