Uhhh...personally, I think that any advantages that Brian Wilson has received have largely been earned through his songwriting and production talents. True, there's been an incredible amount of hype over the years about Smile. However, the album that was released in 2004 is very different than the tapes from 1967. A lot of this is about his comeback and that's a great thing. To say that he wasted his life and took thirty plus years to release dreck doesn't really represent his talent or the reality.

IMO, the Beach Boys didn't "come through" for Wilson as much as they were a vehicle for HIS talents. They could sing...largely due to the direction and arranging of Wilson. They could play...passibly. Studio musicians were often used. Ultimately, his pop songs from the 63-66 period are pretty hard to deny and the Beach Boys certainly didn't write many of them during that period. I would submit to you that Wilson could get 4 cutesy Ricky Nelson clones who sung like machines for the Beach Boys and it wouldn't matter because it was how that music made you feel..they could dress up like cops and sing about Grecian Formula as long as the melodies and feel of those songs was there. Then you could say that the Ricky Nelson clone band "came through" again for Wilson. Same difference....
