Well..Pet Sounds and Pepper were both pop albums no matter how you want to slice it. This stuff wasn't Brian Eno or Captain Beefheart..it was artsy pop that in a lot of ways reflected the era. Neither Pet Sounds or Pepper are inaccessible to the average listener although they're certainly different than what came before for both groups. I too like Revolver more than Pepper because it's straight ahead pop versus any trappings of "concept album". That being said, Pepper had a buzz about it when it was released ( you might even remember Ginsburg touting it as brilliant poetry ) that Pet Sounds didn't have. Summer of Love, record listening parties to analyze Pepper...all that crap. Pet Sounds was a head scratcher for the folks who wanted Little Deuce Coupe II. My point was that it didn't matter what the sales figures were...again, sales, going gold or where it charted is not the point. The Beach Boys were becoming less popular as a product of the change in music at that time. I don't think Pet Sounds or Smile had much to do with that...they were squares that were getting dissed by everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Country Joe MacDonald and spent a lot of time in 68/69 touring Europe...where they had a career. They didn't become popular again until the Endless Summer Greatest Hits package came out in '74. Suddenly, they were playing large stadiums again.
