I think it's been opined here many times that Pet Sounds is a more direct comparison vs. Pepper even though it may not subscribe to the same definition of "concept album". While Pet Sounds wasn't really a concept album in the Sgt. Pepper / Smile musical vein, it absolutely was in terms of use of the studio. There are some amazing creative strokes on Pet Sounds. The theremin on "I Just Wasn't Meant for These Times" still knocks me out. You don't really sense it's not a vocal part until the end of the phrase. Whether intended on not, it's almost a "gotcha" type of musical moment. You get a sense of how strong a talent Brian Wilson was / is with both the production and musical sense of that album.
