Re: Finally got my Apollo (cameo post from a vinyl asylum guy)

Hi Bill,

This is (insert name here) - the original poster. I really appreciate your standing up for the Apollo because it does sound beautiful - I am listening to it as I am typing and it keeps blowing me away with how good it sounds. For $1K it's a killer player. I have a feeling my Thorenses will get some much deserved rest in the next few days.

I don't think I have an older production unit (better not since I just got it and I waited a couple of months for it). But perhaps you can confirm that - the serial number is: 038920. It's a new unit (came in a sealed box), bought from an authorized dealer with whom I have been dealing for a long time, and I have never talked with you (or anyone else) on the phone about it.

As far as the problems go, I am aware of the fact that the Apollo takes some time to initialize (much less than people report and much less of an issue than some people think). But, once the initalization is done and it appears ready to play the first track, I expect that when I press PLAY it plays the first track. If that does not happen I believe there is a bug somewhere. Also, when it refuses to take inputs and I have to power-cycle, it sure smells like some kind of bug.

Perhaps, I didn't give it enough time to complete the initialization (but even if I press any buttons before initialization is complete it should just ignore them), or when it had problem I could have been playing a hybrid SACD (I did not play any MP3 or home-made CDs), or perhaps it's a bit less tolerant of some kind of CD errors and does not do well on some CDs that play well in other players. But I do not suffer from hallucinations and the "phenomena" I reported were minor (to me) but very real.

In the next few days I will keep a close eye on it and report back.

Alberto
