Re: Ah...the unproven long term listening excuse

I really don't disagree with anything you say. In fact, I think you help flesh out the point I was trying to make.

For B testing, if someone wants to go through the riggors of DBTs for purposes of personal choice, I have no argument with that person. It's just I choose not to. I focus on the enjoyment factor. If I think my enjoyment improves with the new component then I figure its worth the investment.

My primary objective as an audiophile is my own self-centered, selfish desire to maximize my enjoyment of listening to recorded music in my own home. I'm not a scientist and have no desire to transform my sound room into a lab. But that does not mean I don't appreciate the need for controlled testing to support claims of difference or relative merit.

If someone asks my opinion about a particular cable or component (which seldom happens), I try to avoid making claims. Rather I simply try to share my own personal experience. Hopefully, I remember to qualify my statements with the caveat that they are not supported by valid controlled testing and therefore are of virtually no value to anyone other than me.

That is why I long ago gave up reading reviews. I don't believe that any reviewer is capable of avoiding the influence of those factors that DBTs are designed to eliminate and I can't remember ever reading a review in the high end rags that was supported by controlled testing.

I do give some credit to reports by consumers that seem to consistently describe certain characteristics or merit of a particular component, but even with those reports the power of suggestion cannot be discounted.
