That's a good point. An SEM is chemically non-specific. Another possibility would be to do an elemental analysis by Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS for short). This again would only give bulk concentrations and would not tell anything about the thickness of the layers or even what layers they are in. A possibility that WOULD give both chemical and spatial characteristics would be to use laser ablation mass spectrometry. By varying the laser's intensity one can sample different crossectional layers. Anyway, since I now seriously doubt this "debunking" effort this whole debate has reached epic proportions of silliness and I will attempt to refrain from further comment.
