RE: The answer to your bafflement

Polluted is not a very scientific term here. Exactly how does the SMPS noise affect the USB interface or the computer doing computation and data transfer?

Are you talking about conducted emissions back into the AC power?

Here is another data point: I changed to faster more tightly coupled SMPS for my DAC and the dynamics and noise floor both improved. This new supply does however have linear regulators following the switchers. This says that its probably not the conducted noise back into the AC line that is reducing the dynamics.

I've heard SMPS cause a tiny buzz in the audio output when they are plugged into the same circuit as an amplifier, but no change in dynamics.
