RE: Very interesting! ...

Happy to learn that you are getting more enjoyment!

At first, I could not stomach JRiver for PCM playback until they finally adopted SoX as an alternative. Only then did I buy it, perhaps 2 years ago. I recently bought the latest version of JR hoping that among their tweaks they have finally added the SoX range of options. I don't know that they have, though.

Right now, my installed JR version sounds like they set SoX at linear phase and it is fixed there. Yet, my Maggies sound better at minimum phase, and up to 21 steps from there. This is on the scale shown in Foobar2k's SoX options. Long ago, when I used cPlay, which had the same scale, I also always went for minimum phase. It sounds more accurate to me on a wider range of instruments.

Linear phase however has it charms. If I remember well, pianos and acoustic guitars sound comparatively "fuller". It's not as accurate as in minimum phase but certainly pleasingly warm with some recordings. And JR's PCM music (with SoX enabled) is very good altogether inside the cMP2 optimizing wrapper (WInXP only). BTW, if you decide to install FB2k, let me know and I'll send you a couple of add-ons that may not be openly available. One of them inverts signal polarity.)
