Home Planar Speaker Asylum

I noticed those as they were close.

The tweeters can suffer from excessive play in the ribbon causing a need to replace. The aluminum can rip causing a need to replace. Age can tire out the ribbon. The speaker should have a magnetic chunk of metal to cover the ribbon anytime the speaker is moved. A simple fall forward to the floor will rip the ribbon.

Magnepan will supply new ribbons for a c-note a pop plus shipping of about 28 bucks one or two. These will come in the PVC tube for return of your tired, broken or blowed up ribbons on exchange otherwise Magnepan will charge you an additional $300. Each or per pair, I don't know as exchange is the way to go.

Magnepan will grudgingly supply a rebuild kit that will do three ribbons but it is very fiddly work and not recommended for anyone in the US that can avail themselves of reasonable shipping charges. These kits are for the folks overseas that can't economically ship the tweeters back on exchange.

The grilles can be replaced if needed and Magnepan has beige, black and gray available for about 31 each.

So to test your ribbons, if you can get the speaker home with them intact, you can listen to the speaker as well as observe the tweeter foil for excessive movement. It is glued down in spots along the full length and these spots can come undone leading to less than correctly suspended ribbons.

No reason to call Magnepan unless you want to get some tweeter cover strips for moving the speakers. I would just order two new tweeters and ask if you can keep the metal strips for your speakers. They will probably say yes. The with a reglue of the loose wires on the Mylar, you will have nearly brand new 2.5/Rs.
