Sometimes you can shine a strong flashlight through the grill cloth and get a look. Check the tops & bottoms, it's likely to start there first.
BTW, my room is not as big as I would like to have so my 2.5's are 2ft from the sidewall and 3ft from the wall behind and they do quite well.
