But, yes, they should be at least 4' out ... in fact, my own preference is that the centre of the bass panel should be 1/5th of the length out from the front wall (and 1/5th of the width in from the side walls). I have a 27' long room.
Re. replacing the ribbons yourself - yes, Magnepan do sell a repair kit but (although I've done many things to my Maggies, including re-laying a mid driver) I would not like to replace a ribbon. I suggest you would need to do them both first - just to get the practice - and then do them again, for keeps!! ;-))
Yes, you save a bit of money doing it yourself but (as Magnepan will send you new ribbons first) you have a minimal "outage time" if you pay for their replacement ribbons.
