Linked video report by the 60 Minutes news team. New evidence shows how a Russian military intelligence unit deployed next-generation acoustic weapons against US diplomats.
Follow Ups:
Within the first few minutes, this piece screamed "Sensational 'journalism'".
I was reminded of the commentary and "evidence" often presented with regard to UFOs, and the blather presented regularly in the grocery store checkout lane's publications.
I might watch more of it when I have some time to waste on mindless stuff (entertainment).

In addition, "Maloof added that many of the alleged victims likely spent a lot of time in SCIFs (sensitive compartmented information facilities) that are full of specialized electronic equipment which may have contributed to the symptoms."

Dmitri Shostakovich
You are right about 'belief' being a prime reason for betraying one's country and becoming a spy. American spies in the 1930s and 1940s were primarily motivated by ideological sympathy with communism, an alleged 'worker's paradise'. Because many people on the left had issues with capitalism and American politics. There was strong flirtation with Marxism and recruitment into the Communist party (under control by Moscow of course). British spies like the 'Cambridge Five" had similar motivations. They had resentments against their home country and belief that the Soviet system was somehow better.Maybe Comrade Chris was badly mistreated in his youth, or fell out of his cradle as an infant? Hard to tell about these things. In any case it's clear that he has hatreds against American culture and its capitalist foundations. Chris has said as much in his many posts.
American spies for Russia in recent decades have been different. They've mostly been motivated by money. Russia was more than willing to pay for the services of John Walker, Aldrich Ames, Ronald Pelton, and Clyde Conrad.
Comrade Chris appears to be a throwback to the old days. Motivated more by ideology than money. But it's hard to tell... I wouldn't put it past Comrade Chris to be taking money for his zealous pro-Russian posting in this forum.

But I think all three of you need to work more on your smearing and innuendo! Remember: practice makes perfect! ;-)

Wikipedia has a page all about 'Sputnik', the source for your post. Linked. A couple quotes from that Wikipedia page:"Sputnik is frequently described by academics and journalists as a Russian propaganda outlet." "The fundamental purpose of dezinformatsiya, or Russian disinformation, experts said, is to undermine the official version of events - even the very idea that there is a true version of events - and foster a kind of policy paralysis.""
"Foreign Policy magazine has described Sputnik as a slick and internet-savvy outlet of Kremlin propaganda, which "remixes President Vladimir Putin's brand of revanchist nationalism for an international audience... beating a predictable drum of anti-Western rhetoric.""
"Sputnik was banned in the European Union in February 2022 (along with RT) following the Russian invasion of Ukraine."
What else ya got, Comrade Chris? You think people in this forum can't spot glaringly obvious instances of Russian propaganda?
Edits: 04/03/24
Especially since Wikipedia is known to be overseen by the intelligence state. They're afraid that if the Russian point of view gets out into Western societies, those societies will be more difficult for the intelligence state to manipulate.
It's also interesting that you, as usual, don't take on the actual substance of the Sputnik article and instead try to marshal all the naysaying from our own intelligence agencies - which are likely not very trustworthy themselves. But I know that you're glued-in to whatever they say as gospel, so, I'm not really surprised. SMS.

That's you in the photo, right?
It's obvious that you certainly don't know what fascism means. Feeling bad about Ukraine these days? Your toddler mind can't deal with the fact that their situation is lost, so the only thing you know to do is to send them more and more billions and throw around terms (like fascism) whose meaning you don't even know. Wha, wha, wha!
But cheer up. . . here's a special treat now - just for you! ;-)

BTW, if what you say is true, our prisons would be filled with AIPAC employees.
So that's your comeback? That I have a 'toddler's brain'? Hilarious! So we can forget the primary topic of this sub-thread. That you are an advocate of Russian fascism. That you post links to Russian government propaganda. And cheer on Russia's murderous war against Ukraine.
But you do have a strength, Comrade Chris, albeit not one that is ethical. You argue everything to dust. Outlasting others in every single thread. You always pummel people with a comeback, no matter how insubstantial.
Well, I'm going to take my toddler's brain and wander off into other discussions. You get the last word.

"An impressive investigation Sunday on CBS's "60 Minutes" aired evidence tying so-called Havana Syndrome to an elite Russian intelligence unit."Yup, that 60 Minutes video is getting some good reviews in top publications! But here? Nobody except Abe mentioned that they actually viewed the video. That notwithstanding, opinions here are thick! More than a dozen people replied. Some caustic replies too! "Infotainment" "No meat on the bones". "I would not trust 60 Minutes".
As if you guys can make good judgement without actually having sampled the thing under discussion!
Plenty of smart people in this forum. But many have been harpooned by social media. Quick on the draw with opinions. Stated with authority! And with as few words as possible! Brain bites! Inarticulate brain mumblings! None of it substantive, but all very convenient. Because it's just too much damned trouble nowadays. To read up on a subject. Find facts. Have informed discussion. Write a paragraph or two. And maybe change someone's mind.
I'm gonna get blowback for saying this stuff. But I don't care. Have at it.

(Or, as Dubya liked to say, "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, and. . . uh. . . you can't get fooled again!".)It IS worth noting that the Moscow Times (an anti-Putin rag, owned and published out of Latvia) also covered this story. In the Moscow Times article, it was reported that "U.S. intelligence concluded that foreign involvement was 'very unlikely' in causing Havana Syndrome". So who are we going to believe, US Intelligence, or 60 Minutes? (Come to think of it, that's actually a hard question! LOL!)
You say, "many have been harpooned by social media". But then there are others among us (I won't mention any names), who are all too ready and eager to believe what they find in MSM sources and CON (Corporate Owned News). Do you know anyone like that? ;-)

Surely there's a less accusatory and incriminating names for it, and maybe more politically correct. How about "Headachy Foggy Unstable But Unknown Cause Syndrome"? (HFUBUCS)Or, "Spoilt Food Possibly Bacterial Reaction". (SFPBR)
Or, "Top Ten Percent of Intelligence Employees Hierarchy Lifestyle Condition". (TTPIEHLC)

No meat on the bones.
Nowadays people often deliver opinions first, leaving aside any discussion of facts. Short blunt declarations are now the standard for social media. Because simply declaring something makes it all the more true. No need to demonstrate that one has any command or understanding of the thing one is passing judgement on.I no longer expect people to be skilled in written communications. Or with their reading comprehension. But it is a glorious thing when news of the day can be discussed here with any depth.

Questions the veracity of and motivation behind release of new report, esp now. Timing of release appears to coincide with renewed congressional Ukraine funding push. Much like the Russian-nukes-in-space-satellites of a month or so ago. The attitude is broadly dismissive.
A number of congress critters and right-wing groups have been lobbying against continued funding for Ukraine. But House Speaker Johnson, himself on the right wing, is now pushing to resume such funding. Which is weird, because previously he opposed this funding. It's still an open question whether Johnson will muster enough support to pass a Ukraine aid package.
What I don't get is how people (here in this forum and elsewhere) think there is some sort of political manipulation going on. As if releasing that 60 minutes report was a coordinated political move, a distribution designed to tip the scales of official government policy...
The facts? That 60 Minutes report was a collaboration with Der Spiegel and The Insider. Der Spiegel, based in Germany, is pretty far removed from any advocacy of US government policy. The Insider, based in Riga Latvia, does investigative journalism & fact-checking about Russia; equally distanced from any advocacy of US government policy. And that 60 Minutes report was 5 years in the making, not something concocted on short notice to influence current votes in Congress.
But the interesting thing here is the mere allegation that something inappropriate is going on. That the release of the 60 Minutes report is some kind of political manipulation under control by a hidden hand. Perhaps 60 Minutes is on secret payroll! Taking bribes! Busy concocting 'fake news'! And so forth an so on. That's what courses through some minds of our congress critters. Conspiracy theory. Whack-jobs as leading voices in our government.
the mixed conservative message is only because their funding or brain power doesn't allow them to consider such a reality.I had a good time with the Russian people , but the governmental culture clearly has no decency, killing dissenters, invading other countries, is no problem for those guys.
I once took a ship load of foreign aid rice to Bangladesh. right on the unloading pier, the distinctive handshake symbol of American aid was spray painted over to represent the rice was from the USSR.
They think such actions are clever instead of a moral problem. although the USSR no longer exists I wouldn't put anything past their Putin run government.
Back in the commie days I happened to cross paths with a Russian sailor , a rare sight because they were never allowed off the ship, and this guy only got off because he had a dental emergency . But to get off the ship, he first had to be authorized by the ships political officer,( who did no other work but to report about the crew.) regardless of need, along with his two required escorts.
And if anyone defected to the west, their entire family and close relatives would be "harmed". I didn't press for details. Such is life under authoritarian rule , and I certainly hope those who advocate for such rule here in America never gain such power.

It's conspiracy theories regarding Ukraine funding that's the current narrative. The 60 minutes report has become part of it. The way this one goes, it's pointed out that Ukraine funding is moving off the back burner with Johnson apparently not as unyielding about keeping any bills off the floor. It's considered suspicious that coincidentally, investigative reporting reveals that "Havana syndrome" was(is) real and was perpetrated by some elite Russian operation. The "official" report on Havana syndrome from many months ago found no direct cause and couldn't identify any state actors (unsatisfyingly inconclusive IMO). IOW, the first report was wrong, the Russians really are out to get us and we can get back by funding Ukraine. Anyone not in favor of addl funding for Ukraine will quickly spin the coincidences and contradictions raised by 60 min into govt attempting to improperly influence public opinion to favor funding and disfavor conservative opinion.
.
Not just conservatives.

We are inclusive and diverse, but dissent will not be tolerated.
Two points:One: Liberals scoff and make fun of anything/anyone who disagrees with them. How long have you heard/read the term "faux news" in reference to FOX News? So, lambasting "the other side" isn't a one-sided sport.
Two: Nothing in politics which gets into the public view is accidental or unscripted. Everything that's important happens, and is said, out of view. Well, except for the occasional slip, like when Biden said to Obama, "This is a big fucking deal". He doesn't normally talk like that in public .

I must take exception to your two points. One, that lambasting the other side isn't a one sided sport. there is no other side to the truth. lies are not equivalent to facts despite them being often being debated as equals for entertainment value that creates advertising dollars. .
Two, the truth is not scripted and impossible to change. only when truth is denied is the news always scripted and controlled.
I thought your comment about Biden being caught cursing was nonsensical, as it made no point, . Everyone knows this is an old fashioned church going guy with the responsibilities of state to mind, so of course he doesn't make a habit of cursing in public , he's not a vulgar unthinking lout and even vulgar politicians usually respect their office enough to act with the usual and expected decorum.
I happen to think that providing healthcare to millions of Americans who previously had none is certainly a big deal, and that fact that the billionaires don't want to be taxed to help fellow Americans in need doesn't impress or concern me in the slightest. I know they will be permanently rich after taxation, if they ungratefully even pay any taxes at all.

Havana Rum is very, very potent and the climate seems to add to the whammy (speaking from experience there)...
I was not surprised they blamed it on the Russians. The targets were all higher level government and/or involved in something that had a negative affect on them.

Not exactly a credible source.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Not like I'm a die-hard champion of their program, but some of their investigative reporting has been really good. On the air for 54 years.
When have they ever botched their reporting or got a story completely wrong? How often does that happen?
Ever since then, they've been on a more or less continuous slide towards mediocrity, and their audience has shrunk and skewed more and more towards the retirement home demographic, as the residents tune in for the latest expose on anyone opposed to official government narratives or corporate culture.
Coming up next week on 60 Minutes: Revealed! The horrible things which MTG has said about the latest woke orthodoxy! (Oops - I think they already ran that segment a year or so ago!)
BTW, vacuous, do YOU live in a retirement home? ;-)
Too many (otherwise) reliable witness have attested to significant symptoms for the problem to be dismissed on account of no brain damage based on CAT scans, MRIs, etc. .
Maybe the symptoms are psychosomatic but there are just too many victims for that to be entirely plausible. Science just isn't all the way in many areas.

Is that you in the photo Comrade Chris? Yes, you do appear to be rather incontinent, if not with actual diapers, surely with your speech.
You know I've never worn Depends in my life, nor do I have a stash of Depends pictures (like you evidently do!). The only way to account for the picture in your post is to conclude that it must be one of your friends at the retirement home where you live - where the big event of the week is to gather round the communal TV set for the weekly broadcast of 60 Minutes - God's unvarnished truth! ;-)
.
One thing I don't like is a bum rap, but if you want to keep generating them, that's on you.
BTW, I notice in fact that you never did answer my question as to whether you live in a retirement home (with your stash of pictures of old men in Depends). That's OK with me - whatever floats your boat! ;-)
Back in the day if your receptionist says Mike Wallace is in the lobby, you head out the back door and hope camera crews aren't in the parking lot!
It's infotainment. Some information but the primary role of 60 Minutes is to entertain.

...the story on W. that cost Dan Rather his job...
Among others. 60 Minutes is infotainment.
I'm not saying they're blowing smoke out their asses this time, but I'll wait till some other actual news source verifies.

From my quick google search... The main reason for Dan Rather's departure from 60 Minutes was a controversy over a 2004 report he did on President George W. Bush's National Guard service during the Vietnam War. Made claims that could not be authenticated.
Linked: Ed Bradley video clip on Audi sudden acceleration.
The Audi acceleration story (which was out and out faked), AND the W. story that cost Dan Rather his job. I just left out the "AND."
On top of which, I've watched CBS and NBC network news casts and IMO even those are 40% bullshit. And they're supposed to be actual news, not newsiness like 60 Minutes .
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.

Gotta rope in Ed Bradley... And there's more! The Politico article below also lists a botched Benghazi report, a fawning Jeff Bezos interview, and a toothless interview with an NSA director.
So they're not an impartial crucible of truth. They get stuff wrong. The scales have fallen from my eyes!
I'm not saying the producers make up everything just that it shouldn't be confused with actual news, and any story run on the show should be taken with a grain of salt until it's verified elsewhere.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.

so, you have the correct approach.
Magazines sure aren't newspapers and too many newspapers strive to be magazines.
Never considered 60 Minutes a source of news, but usually a good source of information.
Also haven't watched it in at least 25 years.
In the 70's and 80's, though they presented some great interviews and interesting topics.
AND... Andy Rooney.

Every news organization that has ever existed has made a mistake on occasion.
The test is whether they admit it and take steps to prevent it in the future.
Else they are merely 'infotainment'.
Besides which, I found this article all about these microwave energy weapons, or at least about how they could work. Waaaaay too technical for me."Pulsed Microwave Energy Transduction of Acoustic Phonon Related Brain Injury"

I wouldn't think it's acoustic but like they speculated microwaves. Airborn sound is absorbed VERY rapidly in the ultrasound range and attenuated by cloth, solids etc.
