A number of congress critters and right-wing groups have been lobbying against continued funding for Ukraine. But House Speaker Johnson, himself on the right wing, is now pushing to resume such funding. Which is weird, because previously he opposed this funding. It's still an open question whether Johnson will muster enough support to pass a Ukraine aid package.
What I don't get is how people (here in this forum and elsewhere) think there is some sort of political manipulation going on. As if releasing that 60 minutes report was a coordinated political move, a distribution designed to tip the scales of official government policy...
The facts? That 60 Minutes report was a collaboration with Der Spiegel and The Insider. Der Spiegel, based in Germany, is pretty far removed from any advocacy of US government policy. The Insider, based in Riga Latvia, does investigative journalism & fact-checking about Russia; equally distanced from any advocacy of US government policy. And that 60 Minutes report was 5 years in the making, not something concocted on short notice to influence current votes in Congress.
But the interesting thing here is the mere allegation that something inappropriate is going on. That the release of the 60 Minutes report is some kind of political manipulation under control by a hidden hand. Perhaps 60 Minutes is on secret payroll! Taking bribes! Busy concocting 'fake news'! And so forth an so on. That's what courses through some minds of our congress critters. Conspiracy theory. Whack-jobs as leading voices in our government.
Follow Ups:
the mixed conservative message is only because their funding or brain power doesn't allow them to consider such a reality.I had a good time with the Russian people , but the governmental culture clearly has no decency, killing dissenters, invading other countries, is no problem for those guys.
I once took a ship load of foreign aid rice to Bangladesh. right on the unloading pier, the distinctive handshake symbol of American aid was spray painted over to represent the rice was from the USSR.
They think such actions are clever instead of a moral problem. although the USSR no longer exists I wouldn't put anything past their Putin run government.
Back in the commie days I happened to cross paths with a Russian sailor , a rare sight because they were never allowed off the ship, and this guy only got off because he had a dental emergency . But to get off the ship, he first had to be authorized by the ships political officer,( who did no other work but to report about the crew.) regardless of need, along with his two required escorts.
And if anyone defected to the west, their entire family and close relatives would be "harmed". I didn't press for details. Such is life under authoritarian rule , and I certainly hope those who advocate for such rule here in America never gain such power.

It's conspiracy theories regarding Ukraine funding that's the current narrative. The 60 minutes report has become part of it. The way this one goes, it's pointed out that Ukraine funding is moving off the back burner with Johnson apparently not as unyielding about keeping any bills off the floor. It's considered suspicious that coincidentally, investigative reporting reveals that "Havana syndrome" was(is) real and was perpetrated by some elite Russian operation. The "official" report on Havana syndrome from many months ago found no direct cause and couldn't identify any state actors (unsatisfyingly inconclusive IMO). IOW, the first report was wrong, the Russians really are out to get us and we can get back by funding Ukraine. Anyone not in favor of addl funding for Ukraine will quickly spin the coincidences and contradictions raised by 60 min into govt attempting to improperly influence public opinion to favor funding and disfavor conservative opinion.
.
Not just conservatives.
