Hi Arbelos,"Did you polish your bearings, and what radius do they have?
I agree that touching the gear directly with the ball sounds better than with the steel sheet provided by Symposium. I also liked the Symposiums better with the cup on top of the ball. It might tame the local resonance of ball on sheet steel better."I'm using 1/2" chrome steel ball bearings as purchased from smallparts.com. I haven't added any polish though some have told me polishing the "cup" in the base adds to performance. This makes some sense as we want the lowest friction possible in these types of devices. (I've experimented with Tungsten Carbide and found they sound even better. I suspect this has something to do with the added weight.)
I've found placement of roller bearings will alter the resulting sound. I ended up making the largest equilateral triangle that will fit under a given component. Placement near the edge leaves the bearing in contact with a stronger part of a component's "box". I wonder if this is helping.
Happy Listening!
Barry
