Good question. I based using the TI-Shield the way I did by ear. From my experience, which I will admit is limited (when it comes to shielding), TI-Shield is much stronger then copper. I have not tried completely surrounding the electronics with TI-Shield or copper.
The reason I did not experiment with completely enclosing or covering multiple sides of the filter was the concern of the electronics shorting. The TI-Shield installed the way I did it, adds to the performance of the filter and to my ears, does not do anything negative. Alan Maher helped me with modding my DVD player the beginning of this year. Part of the mods included the use of TI-Shield. This was the first time I used TI-Shield. I asked Alan the same question you asked me. Alan has a lot of experience with the usage of TI-Shield. He told me that the TI-Shield does not have to enclose the area you are shielding and recommended against doing so.
If you do experiment with different shielding schemes, please let me know how they compare.
Chris
