I think an observant inspector would still find fault with the fact that he would still be using his natural gas lines as a grounding rod but it would definitely be safer that way.For the conductor choice it only makes financial sense to go as big here as the weakest link in the chain. In most cases this is probably the impedance to earth. The hot audiophile ticket would be to spend some money trying to get the earth impedance down, think more ground rods, then tying it all together (single point NEC style at the service entry of course) with high ampacity high frequency response conductor. I think the audiophile ace in the hole here is the fact that the NEC doesn't set limits on the number of ground rods or the ridiculously large ampacity and high frequency response conductor that may be chosen to satisfy the letter of it's law. It's all left up to the chinsyness or audiophoolisheness of the designer. I am guessing the audiophool wouldn't want to stop at just one measly 6AWG conductor would he?
When I suggested what you just did in an earlier post I mentioned ground braid and parallel low guage wires. Both in parallel would be better. The lowgauge round conductors have great ampacity but not so great frequency response. Wide braid offers lower skin effect and makes a better conductor at high frequency. Parralleling them gives the best of both worlds but I am betting a guy could go extreme with one or the other and get close to the same place in the end.
I think the thing to note here is that there is an underlying issue with the houses wiring in that the gas lines shouldn't be used as a ground rod/earthing of the electrical system. That should really be the first change if obeying code is important.
