You'll find that the 12DW7/7247 and 6BQ5/EL84/7189 types have about an equal subjective effect on the proceedings. As the 6BQ5 types are more common and therefore also more varied, you will probably have the most fun with them.
sgmlaw's comments on the 12DW7 are spot-on, consider them as religion on this subject!
My sonic preferences as far as brands go are a trifle different from his, but his statements of fact are beyond any further questioning...
I'll add my voice to Uncle Ned's, in that I never found there to be any difference AT ALL between 12DW7's and 7247's. Consider them FULLY & TOTALLY interchangeable. I would also support Ned's hunch that the B&K's roll chart has the odd gremlin lurking in it, although I do find this problem to be very rare in Hickok testers!
No doubt, though, that compiling valve data for a tester must be one of the most eye-wateringly boring tedious things to do in the entire world, short of performing eye surgery, perhaps.
Then again, what about the guy who has to PROOF-READ the compiled data for the tester roll charts & addendums?
Good grief! Glad it's not me!!!
