Ha, great example! It was not the scientific community who was screaming about the black hole eating the universe. It was the hacks, religious cults, and clairvoyants who started that farce.

The science behind CERN was deeply researched. While not all was known, much was, enough to not only build the device but also predict, and history proves accurately, what the physical results would be.

After all where did they get the billion or so dollars to build it? Obviously the politicians and finance institutions listened to the scientists and ignored the unqualified hacks claiming Armageddon. That kinda supports the "public opinion" idea doesn't it!
