But being pretty directional, we got to bend the panel out to achieve wider horizontal & vertical dispersion. That was certainly true of my earlier Acoustats in the horizontal plane. Move your head by inches and the soundfield changes. The U-1s, on the other hand, radiate into a 90 degree angle by creating flat facets of the diaphragm with a grid. Vertical dispersion as with any line source is determined by their height - hence the seven foot tall panel.
Added to this physical pitfall, its high & low frequencies roll off to make it sound like a mid-frequency transducer rather than "full range" as claimed.
Everything is relative, but I don't consider flat response to 25 hz (as measured in my room) to be a significant low frequency roll off. You are likewise mistaken as to the top end with these speakers as well. Their primary limitations are inefficiency, limited output (at least to some), and the requirement of using a stalwart amp to drive their exceptionally unfriendly load. My 350 watt amps can drive them to as high a level as I care to listen (peaks in the mid 90s).
As I said earlier, horn transducers deliver their characteristic colouration that it tends to add unwanted 'flavour' to any other instruments.
That has been my experience with a number of Altec/JBL/Klipsch models, but I'll be the first to admit I have not auditioned a number of newer horn models such as the Avant Garde, Edgarhorn, etc.
