in a series of editorials found in the first three issues of The Absolute Sound.Quick summary:
1. The Absolute Sound is the sound of live music itself.
2. All of the original reviewers were avid concert-goers and drew conclusions on components and recordings based on the live experience, not comparing them to another component.
3. There is no best "whatchamajigger". (Harry's term)
4. We may be rude to those who write asking which component they should buy because everyone's preferences are different.
5. While the reviewers may agree on how a system sounds, they may be completely at odds as to whether that sound is desirable or not. (Boy, have I observed this factor between hearing the numerous and different systems used by JWC and HP over the three decades I've known them. And my preferences are different still.)
6. Thus, if we cannot agree on what is "best", how can the reader expect to believe what is best? "The point is that you shouldn't" (Dr. Cooledge's exact words)
7. Component compatibility cannot be predicted, so choosing one from column A and one from column B will likely cause trouble.
8. Concluding sentence by JWC in Issue 3 from fall 1973:"Your ears, ultimately, are your responsibility, not ours"
Deja vu all over again! It is a shame that SM chooses to fabricate his own perceived reality of what the audiophile press actually recommends that we do - and then argue with the wall - rather than discovering the truth of the matter by actually reading and finding out the answer! If you want to criticize someone, at least criticize what they have said or written - not what you have imagined they have said.
