It's far from the only competent line stage out there. No magic there, it just switches between sources and raises and lowers the volume. Anyone can do the same thing by running an ECC88 (or other high gm tube) as a cathode follower, assuming non-stupid biasing arrangements.Take a look at the first issue of Bas Horneman's diy e-zine for an example.
