RE: Stator 99, see how easily it begins?

"Be amused, but also remember that if the long-distance, and indeed worldwide and through vast distances in space, transmission of digital data was not a very well undestood and largely a solved problem, then the world would come to a screeching halt. And the examples cited include far more jitter-critical applications than the transmission the the few, sad, old bits needed for 16/44.1 audio."

Well, that just ain't so! They are asynchronous systems and not only doesn't reasonable amounts of jitter matter, the data packets can be grossly damaged in transit and even that doesn't matter because none of it's happening in real time at presentation. As long as you can patch together the whole message while the link still exists then all is well. The worst case is usually telephones but the brain is good at filling in short gaps and the data bandwidth small enough compared to the channel to do hidden resends.

Saying tautologically that if one's DAC is immune to jitter then jitter won't affect ones' DAC is inarguable in much the same way that official utterances are in the HMS Pinafore. Why not go all the way and say "If your stereo is perfect, you just can't get any better!" True, way true.

As everyone knows (you do, don't you?) jitter only causes distortion of the audio signal at the points of conversion. At that point in the DAC the data and clock are multiplied causing the audio hidden in the datastream to be detected. Any jitter in the clock or erroneous data from a jittery A/D process becomes ensconced as distortion in the recovered audio signal. All other moments are of little moment.
